2013 Grand Prix Race #16
Benton, AR - September 21, 2013 - 7:33 AM
Race HistoryThe Arkansas 20K debuted in 1982, the same year as the Arkansas Grand Prix Series. The race was put on by the Saline County Striders, and was a staple of the first decade of the Series, serving as one of the four core races (along with the Spa 10K, the River Run 8K, and the ARK 5K) during the early years of the Arkansas Grand Prix. The Arkansas 20K continued to be part of the Arkansas Grand Prix Series through most of the 1990s and up to the year 2000. In 2001, the Saline County Striders took over management of the Arkansas Marathon, and held it in conjunction with the 20K. That year the Arkansas Marathon was part of the Grand Prix, while the 20K was not. 2009 marked the return of the 20K into the Arkansas Grand Prix Series! Course DescriptionArkansas 20K starts in front of the Benton High School Cook Field House on Border Street. The course then follows Sevier Street through downtown Benton, past the historic Saline County Courthouse, through residential areas, across the bridge over Interstate 30, and through additional residential areas. After crossing the new Saline River Bridge, the course continues out Old Hwy. 67 to I-30. The course turns right before reaching the I-30 underpass and follows the westbound access road to the turnaround approximately 3/10 mile past Mountain View Road. Runners return by the same route and finish in front of Cook Field House.
