Gun Time or Chip time

Post by captkirk »

Do you think that races should be decided by gun times or chip times?
The difference between a jogger and a runner is an entry blank.

Well, that's a sticky wicket. I agree with the Overall should be by Gun Time, Age Groups by Chip Time is okay with me. Of course neither really apply to me so I don't really have a dog in this fight.

I vote chip time simply because no matter where you line up, you will be timed for going the same distance as all the other runners. With gun time, especially in large races, you may run a block or two further than those runners that start at the start line. Case in point, I ran the Disney Marathon back in 2008 and it took me almost 6 minutes to get to the start line.

Chip Time

I vote chip time because sometimes it's just too dangerous to get up on the starting line. Not because you might get run over but because of all the smack talk that might knock you over! LOL

It's only fair that it be chip time when available so you aren't penalized for being pushed to the back.
